Longer, wider and taller than the average automobile, an RV requires careful attention to surroundings while traveling in heavily populated areas.
If possible, plan the arrival around commuter times to avoid congestion. Prior to entering city limits, fill the fuel tank in anticipation of added idling. Fuel stations equipped to handle large rigs are usually located on the outskirts of town.
Due to the added engine horsepower, it is necessary to maintain a steady controlled speed when navigating through city streets. Frequently reference outside mirrors and monitor the surrounding traffic. Maintain plenty of stopping distance.
When making turns, slow down and swing wide. Carefully track the rear path of the RV during a turn. Look high to assure street signs are clearing the awning, slide rooms and sidewalls.
If the rear tire goes up onto a curb a few things can occur. The top of the RV on the opposite side may inch over and cause awnings or a slide room to collide with an obstacle. Another thing that can happen is damage to the rim and tire.
Speed bumps are designed to slow traffic. Traveling over a speed bump at excess speed can cause damage to the oil pan or rear mud flap.
Outside mirrors can loosen when the RV hits a bump or pot hole. Frequently check mirrors and tighten with an Allen wrench when necessary to insure safe driving.
Use caution when entering tight turns, narrow alleyways or cul-de-sacs. If possible, get out and assess the area before proceeding with the RV. Drive slowly, keeping an eye out for overhangs. Tree limbs on city streets can damage roof components and scratch the sidewall paint. If there is nowhere to turn around, it may be necessary to back out. Be sure to first disconnect the tow car to prevent damage to the tow bar.
When parking, look for a pull through location to reduce back up situations. In large lots, position the RV away from the crowd to avoid getting boxed in.
If the RV collides with object, stop immediately. Do not attempt to continue driving and risk increased damage to the RV.
