Shore Power

The RV shore power system is made up of three components - an inlet to the RV electrical system, a connector attached to that inlet and the shore power cord. To procure electricity it is necessary to plug the shore power cord into a stationary receptacle offering a power supply. The RV shore power system requires proper handling and routine maintenance to provide continued reliable service.

To use the shore power cord, position the RV in proximity of the power pedestal. Extend only as much cord as needed to reach the connection to prevent excess cord from creating a safety hazard when walking around the vehicle. Avoid running the cord through standing water. Refrain from using an extension cord to increase distance. This will reduce the power capacity and could potentially cause damage to on board electronics.

If your power cord connections are incompatible to the power pedestal, it may be necessary to use an adapter to reconfigure one current rating to another. Use only an adapter rated for RV operation. Remember to retrieve the adapter when disconnecting from the power pedestal. Wipe the adapter with a cloth to remove dirt and debris and store the adapter in a clean, dry location.

Disconnect all accessory items prior to plugging and unplugging shore power. Turn the shore power breaker (located at the pedestal) off prior to connecting and disconnecting the cord. In the event of an electrical failure at the pedestal, disconnect the shore cord and contact park management. Do not attempt to repair the pedestal and risk personal bodily injury.

Detachable shore power cords are generally stored inside a cargo bay and require plugging in at both ends. Keep the storage bay clear of debris and always store the cord neatly wrapped. If the RV electrical system is undergoing troubleshooting and repair, make certain the technician powers the RV using your detachable shore cord and not one universally utilized by the shop because the problem may be with the cord.

Automatic retract shore power cords are coiled on a cylinder or inside a storage receptacle. Auto retract is designed to self-wrap in the storage position. Occasionally inspect the shore cord bucket. Bolts used to secure the motor may loosen during travel. When operating the auto-retract feature, listen for sounds that could indicate a problem.

Before putting away the cord, wipe the surface with a cloth to remove dirt and debris and carefully inspect the cord for signs of wear and tear.

Before performing any type of shore cord inspection or service, disconnect the cord from the power supply. To examine the cord end that connects to the RV on models designed without a cord reel, first disconnect the power cord from the shore supply. Using a small, straight blade screwdriver, remove the small screws positioned on the end of the cord. Once the screws are backed out, slide down the cord collar to expose interior wires. Check the wires for snugness and secure loose wiring.

On the other end of the shore power cord is the plug used to connect into the power pedestal. Examine this end for burned or discolored terminals. Check tightness of the retainer securing the wire.

When you remove the outer sleeve to examine the shore cord use a compatible sized screwdriver to avoid damaging the screw and accelerating wear.

If you accidentally drive over the shower power cord while connected, or drive away without first unplugging the cord from the power pedestal, replace the cord with a new unit. Damage has likely been done inside the cord and continued use with a faulty cord may damage RV electronics.
