It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of trying to drive a set amount of miles in the RV each day, but for safety's sake to you as well as the vehicle, take the time to stop often and inspect the motor home and tow vehicle. If you have pulled over for a meal or to do some shopping, save your walk around inspection for after the excursion when you will feel more refreshed. Don't get flustered by the hustle and bustle of a busy fuel station and forego a walk around inspection. Once the tanks are filled pull away from the pumps and safely out of the line of traffic before undertaking to examine the RV and tow vehicle.
At each stop remember to place the transmission in Park and to engage the parking brake. If you are traveling with pets, use caution when opening the entry door to prevent active animals from unexpectedly bolting out the open door. When leaving pets behind, set interior air to a comfortable temperature. If you intend to be away from the RV for a period of time, park in a well-lit area and lock the doors.
Develop a habit of performing the same walk around inspection at each stop. Include examination under and around the RV and tow vehicle for any signs of leaks. Confirm that all awnings and exterior doors are securely latched. Check RV tires for proper pressures and clear away rocks or nails that may have attached inside the tire tread. Closely inspect dual tires for large debris that may have become trapped between the tires.
Carefully examine the tow vehicle connection. Insure that the hitch is firmly locked in place, all safety chains are connected and that the wire plug used to control the taillights is securely attached. If you are towing an automobile, double check that the key is in the unlocked steering position and that the transmission is set as required. This is a particularly important walk around inspection following a lengthy stop when you may have removed the key from the tow car's ignition and locked the doors to prevent theft.
Make frequent rest stops to prevent yourself from becoming tired and susceptible to making mistakes. Confirm that you are in possession of the keys before locking the entry door, from inside or out, to avoid leaving keys hanging from the exterior lock. Be safe. Keep the RV locked at all times and do not open the door for strangers. Prior to once more heading off down the road, confirm that all passengers are on board and safely secure in their seats.
Don't delay, have all suspected problems on the RV or tow vehicle promptly inspected to avoid unexpected and costly roadside repairs.
