Tech Tip 232: 7/17/07 - Bed Struts Your RV may provide storage under the bed for use to stow out of the way items. Use caution to avoid overloading this area. To access under bed storage, hydraulic struts are designed to hold the bed in the open position. If a strut fails to hold the bed open, first confirm you have lifted the mattress to the full up position. If you are confident the bed is positioned to the fully open position and the strut still fails to operate, it may be necessary to replace a strut. The strut is under high pressure. If a strut fails, the strut cannot be repaired, but must be replaced. To order a replacement strut, take note of the part number or pound rating listed on the strut and call your local selling dealer, or Monaco National Parts. Obtain a piece of solid wood measuring from the floor to the bed’s open position for support. Using a flat blade screwdriver, remove the clip located over the ball and slightly pry up just enough to pull the strut from the ball. Repeat the procedure at the other end of the strut. To install a new strut, grease the ball, place strut ends on the ball and push the clip back into position. Keep your fingers out of harm’s way. For maximum use of the RV bedroom wardrobe, utilize multiple layer hangers to increase storage capacity inside the wardrobe, however, use a measure of caution to avoid adding excess cargo weight. Store only items that are in season. Place out of season clothing in vacuum sealed space bags and keep them in an out of the way location, such as under the bed or under the sofa if storage is provided. Designate a box in one of the storage bays for items you no longer wear, and when this box is full, donate unwanted items to a local charity. A small basket placed near the entry door is a good place to keep shoes for quick access when going in and out of the RV. Use a separate pair of shoes for fueling purposes only, and avoid wearing them in the RV to avoid stains on the carpet. See-through storage containers are available for shoe storage, and these can be kept inside the bedroom wardrobe, or in the under-bed storage compartment. Nightstands often attract disorder. To reduce clutter, limit the nightstand to tissue, cell phone, alarm clock, glass of water and a flashlight in the event of a campground power outage. Keep television and stereo remotes along with spare batteries in a caddy for easy retrieval. If the washer/dryer components are located in the bedroom, stow laundry in the built-in hamper. If no hamper is provided, inexpensive netted duffle bags are a good place to store laundry and can be placed in a cargo bay until it is time to wash and dry the articles.
