Tech Tip 228: 6/1/07 - Cab Seats

Power operated pilot and co-pilot seats can be adjusted for distance, height, firmness and tension using the controls located on the outside bottom portion of the seat.  The power adjustment feature requires 12-volt power from the house batteries and fuses for each seat are located in the fuse box.  On most models the arm portion of the chair can be moved up or down, and also adjusted for comfort using a button located on one end of the arm or in a central location under the arm.

Seats may swivel to provide additional chair space while the RV is parked.  Prior to turning the pilot seat, move the seat to its farthest back position and place the steering wheel in the upright position.  This will help to provide clearance between the seat back and the steering wheel.  When the chair is once more turned to face the front windshield, it may be necessary to move the pilot seat forward prior to retracting the living room slide.

To swivel the pilot and co-pilot seats, locate the lever under the seat.  Pulling up on the lever with one hand, turn the seat towards the center and keep turning until the seat is completely around and facing the rear of the vehicle.  When you are ready to return the seats to driving position, once more pull up on the lever and swivel the seats back towards the center of the room.  Attempts to turn the seats in a complete circle will result in disconnecting the wires used to operate the power controls.

Avoid keeping sharp objects in your pocket that may puncture the cab seat fabric.  Care and cleaning will depend on fabric type.  Regularly vacuum the cab seats, particularly in crevices and around the floor area underneath, to remove dirt and debris.  On occasion, check the mounting bolts under the seats for tightness.  If liquids spill on to the fabric, blot up excess.  For stain removal on most fabrics, gently wash the area using warm water and a mild detergent.  Before applying stain removal agents to vinyl or cloth surfaces, first test the product in a small inconspicuous area.

Pets often prefer to sit in cab seats while parked to observe outside activities.  You may want to consider covering the seat base with a rug or blanket while parked to protect the fabric from pet nails and hair.

Replacement chairs should be of the good quality that meets national highway safety guidelines.  To measure seats for replacement purposes, first determine the height of the mounting base and pedestal.  Next, measure the chair from seat to the top of the backrest.  For width size, measure the distance from the outside of each arm.  Have replacement chairs installed by a qualified technician to insure the continued integrity of your RV.
