Tech Tip 248: 12/07/07 - Off Season Accommodations Journey to a warm weather location or traveling to see family and friends for the holidays may take you to campgrounds that are still open, but sparsely populated. In the summer when things are up and running a campground can seem warm and inviting, however, as the off season rolls around and only a scattering of RV’s show up on any given night, many features and services listed in the directory may be suspended. Stay extra aware of your surroundings and take the necessary steps to keep you and your possessions safe and secure while staying in these desolate locations. Unless you are familiar with the park, or it comes highly recommended through a trusted source, insist on seeing the campsite before agreeing to pay. Inspect the ground for signs of water build up that may indicate poor drainage. Check the power pedestal, when one is available, to assure good condition. Be sure the water faucet is operating and the sewer dump can be accessed. If specific services, such as clean showers or WIFI accessibility are what brought you to that location, make sure they can be delivered during the off-season. Open window shades during the day to keep an eye on your surroundings. Stow valuables out of sight. At night put away lawn chairs, tables, rugs, etc., and lock all the cargo bay doors. If your RV comes equipped with a security system, learn to use this feature and engage the alarm when leaving the vehicle or before going to bed. Invest in a cellular telephone and always keep the battery charged. Keep the RV, tow car and trailer hitches locked at all times. If a stranger approaches the door, open a nearby window to speak with them. Do not volunteer to go away from the RV to offer assistance. When a stranger asks for help, offer to make a telephone call on their behalf. In the event you find yourself near neighboring campers whose actions and behavior give you a bad feeling, avoid a confrontation that could lead to harm against you or your vehicles. Instead, pack up and leave for a different location down the road. During travel be wary when stopping. Refrain from carrying large amounts of cash. Lock the entry door when fueling the RV. If another vehicle collides with the RV while traveling in a dark, drive to a well-lit location and call for help. Do not get out of the vehicle until the police arrive. Perform ATM stops, fuel fills and shopping excursions during daylight hours. When stopping at a shopping center, park the vehicle with the entry door facing the storefront and lock all windows and doors before leaving. Rest areas are also often deserted during the off-season. If you intend to stop for a short break, or to walk the dog, remember to keep the door locked even when you plan on being away for only a few moments. ©2007 Monaco Coach Corporation.
